Balance, falls& staying independent.
Unsteady on your feet, afraid of falling, or slower than you used to be: strength and balance can be rebuilt at any age.
What it is
As we age, strength, balance and reaction time can decline, especially after an illness, a hospital stay or a period of inactivity, and the risk of falling rises. A fall can then lead to fear of falling, which leads to doing less, which leads to more weakness. The good news is that strength and balance respond to training at any age, and well-designed exercise programmes are proven to reduce falls.
How we treat it
- 01An assessment of strength, balance, walking and the everyday tasks that have become difficult.
- 02Progressive strength training for the legs and trunk, at a level that is safe and comfortable.
- 03Balance training, from steady standing to walking, turning and stepping.
- 04Practice of getting up from a chair and from the floor safely, and how to get up after a fall.
- 05Advice on home safety, footwear and walking aids, with family involved where helpful.
When to see a doctor first. See a doctor promptly after any fall with a head injury, new confusion or pain that stops you walking, and for unexplained falls, blackouts, new dizziness, or a sudden change in walking or balance, which can have medical causes that need checking.
DR Vaishali your physiotherapy works me lot. Now I am able to walk and go anywhere because of you. You explain me every exercise particularly. I am very grateful that u are my physio Dr and friend.
Outstanding care from start to finish. Dr. Vaishali worked with my grandmother to rebuild her strength and balance, showing incredible patience, kindness, and professional skill throughout her sessions. Seeing her regain her independence and move without pain has meant the world to our family. Highly recommended!
Commonquestions.
- Is exercise safe for elderly patients?
- Yes, when it is chosen and progressed for the individual. Sessions start at a level the person is comfortable with, and every exercise is supervised until it can be done safely at home.
- Can balance really improve at an older age?
- Yes. Balance and strength respond to regular, specific practice at any age, and structured programmes are shown to reduce the risk of falls.
- Should family members come along?
- They are very welcome. They can learn how to help with exercises at home and how to make the home safer.
