Neck pain& cervical spondylosis.
A stiff, aching neck, headaches from the base of the skull, or pain running into the arm: assessed properly, then treated by hand.
What it is
Most neck pain is mechanical, coming from the joints, discs and muscles of the neck, and it is often linked to long hours at a desk or on a phone, sleeping position or stress. Cervical spondylosis is the age-related wear of the discs and joints in the neck. It shows up on many scans after middle age, often without any symptoms, but it can cause stiffness and pain, and sometimes nerve irritation that sends pain, tingling or numbness into the arm.
How we treat it
- 01An assessment of the neck, upper back and shoulders, with a nerve check if there are symptoms in the arm.
- 02Manual therapy to restore movement to stiff neck and upper back segments.
- 03Dry needling or soft-tissue work for tight, tender muscles, where appropriate.
- 04Neurodynamics when an irritated nerve is sending symptoms into the arm.
- 05Advice on posture and work set-up, and strengthening of the deep neck and shoulder muscles.
When to see a doctor first. See a doctor urgently if neck pain follows a fall or accident, or comes with a sudden severe headache, dizziness, difficulty speaking or swallowing, clumsy hands, loss of balance, or weakness in the arms or legs.
Commonquestions.
- Can cervical spondylosis be cured?
- The wear itself does not reverse, but the symptoms often respond well to treatment. Many people with spondylosis on a scan have little or no pain once movement and strength are restored.
- Is neck manipulation safe?
- It is only used after careful screening, only when it is appropriate for you, and never without your agreement. Gentle mobilisation works well for many people and is always available instead.
- Does poor posture cause neck pain?
- Long periods in one position, especially looking down at a screen or phone, commonly contribute. Changing position often and building strength matters more than holding one perfect posture.
Treatments we use for it
- Manual TherapyPrecise hands-on mobilisation that gives stiff, guarded joints their range back.
- Dry NeedlingFine needles into the trigger point, for deep pain surface work cannot reach.
- NeurodynamicsRestoring glide in nerves that have become sensitised or entrapped.
- Therapeutic TapingKeeps the correction working long after the session ends.
