Post-operative rehab

After surgery,back on your feet.

Hip, knee, shoulder, spine or fracture surgery: a staged plan that follows your surgeon’s protocol, from the first steps to everyday life.

What it is

Surgery repairs the structure, but strength, movement, balance and confidence have to be rebuilt afterwards, and that is what rehabilitation does. Common examples are joint replacements of the hip, knee or shoulder, fixation of fractures, ligament reconstructions and spine surgery. Each operation comes with its own precautions and timeline, set by the surgeon, and the rehab is built around them.

How we treat it

  1. 01A review of your surgery, the discharge summary and your surgeon’s precautions before anything else.
  2. 02Early, safe movement to limit stiffness, swelling and muscle loss.
  3. 03Gait training: weight-bearing as allowed, then progressing from walker to stick to walking freely.
  4. 04Progressive strengthening and balance work, and aqua therapy where water lets you load earlier.
  5. 05Practice of the things you need at home: stairs, getting up from the floor or a low chair, and getting in and out of a car.

When to see a doctor first. Contact your surgeon or a doctor promptly if the wound becomes red, hot, swollen or starts discharging, if you develop a fever, if your calf becomes painful and swollen, or if you suddenly feel breathless or have chest pain.

Commonquestions.

When can I start physiotherapy after my operation?
Usually soon after discharge, sometimes within days, but always according to your surgeon’s instructions. Bring your discharge summary and any precautions you were given, and the plan is built around them.
Is it normal to have pain during rehab after surgery?
Some discomfort while regaining movement and strength is expected, and it should settle within a few hours. Sharp, worsening or unusual pain is not, and we will always adjust the session or check with your surgeon if needed.
Can a family member come with the patient?
Yes, and it often helps. They can learn how to assist safely at home and help with the exercises between sessions.
