Neuro rehabilitation

Stroke& paralysis rehab.

Rebuilding movement, balance and independence after a stroke or nerve injury, one practical goal at a time.

What it is

A stroke, or another injury to the brain, spinal cord or nerves, can leave weakness or paralysis, often on one side of the body, along with problems with balance, walking, arm use and coordination. The brain can relearn a great deal after a stroke, a process called neuroplasticity, and focused, repeated practice of real movements is what drives it. Physiotherapy provides that practice, safely, and keeps progressing it.

How we treat it

  1. 01An assessment of strength, sensation, tone, balance and walking, and of the goals that matter most to the patient and family.
  2. 02Practice of real tasks: sitting up, standing, transferring, walking and using the affected arm.
  3. 03Balance training and fall prevention, progressed as confidence grows.
  4. 04Managing stiffness and tightness so the affected limbs stay comfortable and usable.
  5. 05A home programme, and guidance for family members on helping safely between sessions.

When to see a doctor first. Call emergency services immediately for new signs of a stroke: sudden drooping of the face, weakness in an arm or leg, slurred or confused speech, sudden loss of vision or balance, or a sudden severe headache. Every minute counts. Physiotherapy comes after medical treatment, never instead of it.

Commonquestions.

When should rehab start after a stroke?
As soon as the treating doctor says it is safe. The first weeks and months are often when recovery is quickest, but improvement can continue long after, so it is rarely too late to start.
How long does stroke rehabilitation take?
It varies a great deal with the type and size of the stroke and the person’s health before it. Rehab is planned around goals, such as walking indoors or using a cup, and progress towards them is reviewed regularly.
Can family members help?
Yes, and they make a big difference. Daily practice matters, and we will show family members exactly how to assist and what to practise at home.
