Knee pain& knee surgery rehab.

Arthritic knees, painful stairs and life after knee surgery: bend, straightening and strength rebuilt, one stage at a time.

What it is

Knee pain has many sources: wear in the joint (osteoarthritis), pain around the kneecap, ligament and meniscus injuries, and the stiffness and weakness that follow surgery. After a knee replacement, a ligament reconstruction or an arthroscopy, physiotherapy is how the knee gets its bend, its straightening and its strength back, and how you get back to walking, stairs and daily life with confidence.

How we treat it

  1. 01An assessment of the knee, and of the hip and foot, which often decide how the knee is loaded.
  2. 02Manual therapy and mobility work to restore bending and straightening.
  3. 03Progressive strengthening of the thigh and hip muscles, the main protection the knee has.
  4. 04Aqua therapy where it helps, so a painful or recently operated knee can be loaded earlier.
  5. 05After surgery: a staged plan that follows your surgeon’s protocol, from the first steps to stairs and beyond.

When to see a doctor first. See a doctor first if the knee is hot, red and swollen with a fever, if you cannot put weight on it after an injury, or, after surgery, if your calf becomes painful and swollen or the wound is red or discharging.

Commonquestions.

When should I start physiotherapy after knee surgery?
Usually early, often within days, but always according to your surgeon’s protocol. Early, guided movement helps limit stiffness and muscle loss. Bring your discharge summary and we will build the plan around it.
Can physiotherapy help knee arthritis?
Yes. Exercise and strengthening are among the first treatments recommended for knee osteoarthritis, and many people improve their pain and walking with a structured programme.
Do you treat elderly patients?
Yes. Sessions are paced to what each person can comfortably do, and family members are welcome to come along and learn the home exercises.
